Porcelain veneers have the natural look of tooth enamel as well as comparable strength, and resistance to minor damage. The thin pieces of porcelain used are ideal for correcting the shape and position of problem teeth.

Veneers are the solution when teeth have become discolored and, for genetic or other reasons, do not respond to whitening techniques. They are also the best option for fractured teeth and situations where teeth have large gaps between them or are otherwise positioned to present minor bite-related difficulties. The dentist custom-sculpts your porcelain veneers so that it is impossible to tell the difference between them and your natural teeth.

Once you have made the decision to go ahead with correcting your smile by getting porcelain veneers for your discolored or uneven teeth, the dental clinic will have lots of information for you. Let's just cover what's actually involved in before and after care of those expensive porcelain veneers:

Do's
  • Ensure that your teeth are as white as they can be before the veneers are made. Veneers are matched to the rest of your teeth and cannot be whitened afterwards.
  • While dental porcelain is very durable, good dental hygiene is needed for your veneers to attain their longest lifespan – prevent decay and gum disease with regular brushing and flossing.
  • Use a soft toothbrush and an abrasive-free toothpaste.
  • Have your teeth checked twice a year so any early signs of decay in teeth with veneers is spotted early and can be repaired.
  • Make your dental hygienist aware that you have veneers – some cleaning equipment and abrasive polish will damage them.
  • Protect your veneers when you take part in sports or other physical activity – wear a mouthguard.

Don'ts
  • Don't bite your nails, or anything else that might cause chips and cracks in the veneers. That includes hard candy and the end of your pen!
  • Don't grind your teeth, or clench them either. It's a bad habit that causes a great deal of damage to your teeth themselves, let alone the veneers. Get fitted with a night-guard if it's a major problem.
  • Don't eat or drink the things – tea, coffee, wine – known to stain. Veneers themselves a far less prone to staining but, over time, the rest of your teeth might not look as good as your veneers! A straw can prevent the liquid from touching your teeth if you really can't resist.
