Dental emergencies can be extremely painful and unsettling, to say the least. However, most people are unsure of exactly what issues constitute a dental emergency in the first place!
Here is the thing:
If you don’t know what a dental emergency is, how can you be prepared for it? Right?
Well, let’s remedy that, shall we? Let’s find out what constitutes a dental emergency and also what is the best way to deal with it.
Does your problem qualify as being ‘urgent’?
Dental issues are almost always accompanied by pain. If you ever had a toothache, you know how it can be the worst. However, not all dental problems require you to rush into a hospital.
So, what are the issues that constitute a dental emergency? Well, there are quite a few issues that constitute dental emergencies including the following:
- If you have a bleeding that is not stopping
- If one (or more) of your permanent tooth is loose or is completely knocked out
- If you have injury of any kind that resulted in breaking of teeth or damage to your jaw
- If you have a swelling that is painful to touch
- If you have an excruciating toothache causing a sharp or radiating pain
If you have any of the above symptoms, you should call your dentist right away. You can call Oasis Dental Clinic any time of the day, and we will take care of your emergency right away.
So, are there any dental issues that don’t constitute a dental emergency? Sure, there are quite a few; for instance:
- If you lose filling or a crown or even a bridge
- If you have food lodged between your teeth
- If you have a dull toothache
- If your retainer or night guard breaks
All these issues are not emergencies.
But, here’s the deal:
If you have any dental problems, you should never ignore them whether they fall into the emergency category or not.
What to do if you have a dental emergency?
Well, the obvious thing to do is to call your dentist. Dr. Pinky Penalosa is an experienced dentist who can guide you through your emergency. That said, if you have an emergency that has you bleeding uncontrollably, you should visit the ER right away.
Here are some things you can do at home if you have a dental emergency:
l If you knock your tooth loose: Try to stop the bleeding first. Place the tooth in its place gently and give us a call. We can help that loose tooth get stabilized in no time.
l If you knock your tooth out: Well, in this case, make sure to stop the bleeding and ask someone to pick the tooth up, rinse it with clean water and store it in milk. Even fresh water will do if you don't have milk handy. Bring the broken tooth with you when you visit us at the hospital.
l In the case of a toothache: If the pain is dull and if you can bear it, there is no need for an emergency service. Call us during regular hours and schedule an appointment with Dr. Pinky Penalosa. If you have a sharp and radiating pain that you can't bear with or without fever, call us at our emergency number.
The bottom line is:
Dental emergencies are exactly that- emergencies. Make sure that you promptly give Oasis Dental Clinic a call if you think that your dental issue is an emergency. It is always a better idea to have come to us and not have an emergency rather than not to have come at all.
