Do You Have Sinus Pressure or a Toothache?

Sinus infections are quite common during the allergy season. Apart from the struggle and discomfort, a sinus infection can also result in an unexpected issue - toothache. So, it is essential to know whether the pain you are feeling is due to a sinus infection or a tooth problem that needs the attention of a dentist.

Why does inflamed and infected sinus cause toothache?

Inflammation of sinuses, or Sinusitis, can be a result of upper infection of the upper respiratory tract, flu or even common cold. The swelling can increase the pressure in the blocked sinuses, and it may result in an uncomfortable feeling and pain.

But, why a toothache?

Well, as it turns out, there are some sinuses in your nasal passage. However, the one that is important when it comes to a referred tooth pain is called the maxillary sinus.

Here is why:

The roots of the teeth in your upper jaw, especially the molars, lie close to this sinus. So, when the maxillary sinus builds up the pressure, it can cause a sensation of a referred pain in your upper jaw, that can feel like a toothache.

Check the symptoms

Pain in the upper jaw teeth is quite common if you have a sinus infection or blockade. However, it can be difficult to distinguish the pain from a sinus infection and an abscess in the tooth.

Here are some symptoms that may help you distinguish between a toothache and referred pain:

  • Pain in the upper teeth
  • Runny nose
  • A cough and sore throat
  • Fever
  • Bad taste in your mouth
  • Headache
  • Earache
  • Escalation of pain if you are nodding your head, especially up and down

Remember:

If the pain is due to sinus, you will have pain on both sides of your face. Another way to distinguish between a toothache and referred pain due to sinusitis is pushing your upper and lower jaw together. If you don't feel an immediate, sharp pain, it may be a referred pain.

Visit your dentist

Now, whether a toothache you are experiencing is due to a blocked sinus or not, the first thing you should be doing is booking an appointment with Oasis Dental at Rancho Cucamonga, CA. It is crucial that you don’t ignore your toothache, whatever the reason for it.

When you visit our dental clinic, we can help you get to the cause of your toothache. We often use techniques such as X-rays to rule out any tooth related disease as well. If the cause of your toothache is a sinus infection, Dr. Pinky Penalosa may prescribe you medication to get that resolved as well. If a dental cause is ruled out, she will refer you to a physician who will help you get to the bottom of your sinusitis or any other underlying problem.
